Septoplasty
The nasal septum is the vertical wall that separates the nose into two cavities (nasal cavities). It consists of cartilage on the anterior part and bone on the posterior, covered by a layer of tissue called the mucosa. Deviation of the nasal septum is present in 85% of people at different degrees of severity. This can occur due to nasal microtraumas that usually go unnoticed during the growth phase of the septum, including while in-utero. Face injuries and nasal fractures can also be the cause of septal deviation.
Septoplasty is the surgery that corrects this deviation. The purpose of this surgery is to centralize the nasal septum, both for aesthetic appeal as well as for clinical indications when the deviation causes major nasal obstruction, infections in the paranasal sinuses (sinusitis), headaches, and to complement the treatment of snoring and sleep apnea.
Not all people with septal deviation needs surgery. Identifying the necessity of a septoplasty larger depends on the degree of the deviation and the symptoms presented.
