The Art & Science of Crafting A Beautiful, Natural-looking NOSE
RHinoPlasty In Northern Virginia
Turbinoplasty
Turbinoplasty is the surgery performed to decrease the nasal turbinates (also called concha), which are anatomical structures inside our nose (located on the lateral walls of the nose) that help to humidify and heat the air that comes through the nose before entering the lungs. When enlarged, turbinates can cause nasal obstruction.
If the turbinates are pathologically enlarged, and drug treatment does not help, then a turbinoplasty may be advisable. This procedure is often performed in conjunction with a septoplasty.
Abnormal turbinate enlargement can be caused by various reasons, such as:
- Allergic reactions: Allergic reactions and rhinitis, for example, to pollen (hay fever), are the most common cause of inflammation of the nasal mucosa. While acute cold-related inflammation usually resolves quickly, allergies often lead to chronic inflammation.
- Medications: Swelling of the turbinates can be caused by certain medications. For example, if you overuse or prolong the use of nasal sprays or drops to relieve nasal swelling, then the active substances in these products can harm the turbinates and mucous membranes.
- Anatomical defects
- Excessive tissue overgrowth
